GLOBAL ELECTIONS DAY

Sarajevo, February 5, 2014 – At the third GEO Conference, that took place in Siofok, Hungary in 2005, the election experts from all around the world sent an important message about the vital need to strengthen process of democratic development throughout the world. Because of the importance of this message the Association of European Election Officials (ACEEEO) had launched an initiative to hold an annual Global Elections Day on the first Thursday of February every year and participants of the Conference supported the initiative. The first Thursday of February is proposed as the date to celebrate the Global Elections Day because the most of the international agreements in the field of elections were signed on or around this date.

The most important objective of the initiative is to promote the international standards for fair and transparent elections, and raising awareness on the importance of the elections for the democratic processes among the election administration and political parties, as well as among the general public/citizens.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Global Elections Day is celebrated every year, and the purpose of this year’s event, the ninth in the row, is to promote importance of the elections.

Tomorrow, first Thursday in February, the BiH Central Election Commission organizes in Sarajevo an event under motto „Increasing participation of young people and women in democratic processes through elections“.

The gathering will be attended by high international and domestic officials, representatives of election administration of  municipalities/cities in BiH, senior high school students, faculty students, representatives of the Gender Equality Agency BiH, Gender Center of FBiH and the representatives of the non-governmental sector.
