ENTITY CITIZENSHIP OF THE BiH BRČKO DISTRICT'S CITIZENS

Sarajevo, February 7, 2014 – Upon the initiative of the city mayor and the Vice President of the Brčko District BiH Assembly a meeting was held today in Brčko at which the interlocutors discussed the forthcoming General Elections in BiH. The meeting was attended by the President and member of the BiH Central Election Commission Mr. Stjepan Mikić and Novak Božičković, as well as representatives of the Brčko District BiH Election Commission, the OHR Delegation, the EU Delegation to BiH, OSCE, BiH Ministry of civil affairs, the Agency for identification documents and data exchange, FBiH Ministry of interior and RS Ministry of local government and self-government.

According to present legislative regulations all citizens of Brčko District of BiH getting a new ID card have also entity citizenship determined, but the citizens of Brčko District of BiH who have permanent ID cards or whose ID cards expire after elections without entity citizenship determined, can exercise their active and passive voting right at the General Elections in BiH, the right to vote and to be elected, only if their regulate their entity citizenship at the Public Registry Department of the Brčko District of BiH. The entity citizenship determines for which bodies of the entity government and state government the voters of the Brčko District of BiH will vote. The ones willing to run for an office must have the entity citizenship determined until the day elections are called.

The aim of the meeting was to timely react and inform the citizens of Brčko District of BiH about the way in which they can exercise their voting right. The interlocutors at the today’s meeting agreed that a strong media campaign is needed so that all citizens of Brčko District of BiH would get the information about how to acquire entity citizenship if they want to exercise their voting right at the General Elections in BiH.
